About

Hi, I'm Waylon, the creator of CustomAtlas. I built this tool for three reasons: I love geography, I love making things that are unique, and last but not least, I want to make a difference. CustomAtlas is my attempt to make a large customizable consistent maps to use. This is an about page written in the format of a FAQ.

What can I currently do with CustomAtlas?

With CustomAtlas, you can customize and export outline maps from a library of 50 maps. Outline maps are very simple. The customization options are colors, borders, and water features. Maps can be exported into SVG, PNG, and PDF files.

What makes CustomAtlas different?

CustomAtlas stands out because it takes a simple approach to the map editor. It is meant to be easy to use, not overwhelming, and have many maps available. It is constantly evolving, but the core philosophy is unique, a massive library of consistent maps with different style options for different use cases. It is not a general purpose map editor, it's goal is to have specialized polished experiences that handle edge cases.

Is this free?

Currently, Yes! This is entirely free to use. In the future, when the site is out of beta, there will be a monetization system. The way monetization will work is still in progress, but it will be generous to free users.

Where is the data behind the maps from?

Base maps come from Natural Earth, a public domain dataset. We then have a system that turns the data into usable svg files that can be customized.

When you export, the server rebuilds the requested map from your selected settings so the downloaded file matches the map you configured.

Source note: base maps © Natural Earth 2026, modified by CustomAtlas™.
