About
Hi, I'm Waylon, the creator of CustomAtlas. I built this tool for three reasons: I love geography, I love making things that are unique, and last but not least, I want to learn how to manage a website. CustomAtlas is my attempt to make a large, customizable, consistent map library to use. This is an about page written in the format of a FAQ.
What can I currently do with CustomAtlas?
With CustomAtlas, you can customize and export outline maps from a library of currently 502 maps. Outline maps are very simple. The customization options are colors, borders, and water features such as lakes and rivers. Maps can be exported into SVG, PNG, and PDF files.
What makes CustomAtlas different?
CustomAtlas stands out because it takes a simple approach to a map editor. It is meant to be easy to use, and have many maps available. It is constantly evolving, but the core philosophy is this, a massive library of consistently made maps with different options for different use cases. The way it is remains consistent is through a massive backend automation system to minimize human error through the repetitive process of creating maps.
Is this free?
Currently, Yes! This is entirely free to use. In the future, when the site is out of beta, there will be a monetization system. The way monetization will work is still in progress, but it will be generous to free users.
Where is the data behind the maps from?
Base maps use Natural Earth public domain map data. We turn that data into customizable SVG files.
When you export, the server rebuilds the requested map from your selected settings so the downloaded file matches the map you configured.
Source note: base map data from Natural Earth, modified by CustomAtlas™.
